A Beginner’s Guide to Whisky

6 minutes

The word whisky comes from Gaelic uisge beatha, “water of life” (Latin: aqua vitae). People once thought alcohol was the essence distilled from grain, just as the soul was the essence of life.

Beginner: Looking Beyond the Glass

One bitter winter night several years ago, I visited a cultured older friend. The host brought out single-malt Scotch, and conversation turned to whisky. After a few rounds, talk ranged across art, literature, history, and philosophy. Even usually reserved, impeccably polite “closet romantics” were laughing and gesturing. I had not yet learned to drink whisky. Sitting in a corner, I took a few small sips and listened, feeling like someone peeking through the door without knowing how to enter. That evening I glimpsed whisky’s mysterious power, then went home and sought two “masters” to show me the way.

Enthusiast: Discovering Whisky Around the World

Once you know the basics, you seek different kinds, brands, and vintages to test the tasting notes you have read. You follow the books: add bottles to your cabinet, build experience on your palate, and let culture travel from throat to mind.

Compared with pop star Michael Jackson, whisky writer Michael Jackson was just as much of a legend in his own field. If the beginner’s book is a stepping stone, this is an encyclopedia for going deeper.

Whisky: A History of a Golden Spirit

This is not a tasting guide but a history of whisky—or a social and cultural history centered on it. After reading it, the glass in your hand seems weightier. You are drinking not just whisky but culture…

“Whisky Spirit”: Whisky Is Life

People like me would rather be called “whisky spirits” than “drunks.” “Spirit” has a verve and soul that “drunk” cannot express. A spirit is refined through one’s own cultivation; a drunk has stumbled toward ruin. In short, a whisky spirit has ideals and ambitions: whisky in the glass, but not in the heart.

After tasting enough, you will find the whisky that suits your palate. It need not be famous, but it must have a distinctive character. Of three thousand whiskies, I choose just one.

A Farewell to Arms

Yes, this is Hemingway. A lost deserter searches for meaning in wartime; only whisky and love can comfort him:

“I should have the whisky brought without ice and the ice brought separately. Then you know how much whisky you have instead of watering it down with soda. I would rather buy a bottle and have them bring ice and whisky—that is sensible. Good whisky is one of life’s pleasant pleasures, warming you all the way through.”

God of Whisky: Life Is a Bottle of Aged Whisky

At this level, every adjective feels inadequate. Distilled and aged, life itself has settled into a full-bodied bottle. These people live with flavor and pass it on: strength, fragrance, softness, richness. I think of the cultured friends who talked over drinks that winter night; their knowledge and openness drew me in. Now I understand: it was not whisky that introduced me to whisky, but a way of living as rich and mellow as whisky itself.

If Our Language Were Whisky

“Our language is still language, and we live in a world made only of words. But there are exceptions. In those rare, happy moments, our language really can become whisky. And we—I mean, at least I—live dreaming of such moments. How wonderful it would be if our language were whisky.”
